LOS ANGELES – Ford Motor Co. confirmed today that its new diesel V-8 engine will see action in the Expedition SUV by 2010 at the latest. Previously Ford had said that its new diesel, thought to be 4.4-liters and a close relative of the European diesel used in Land Rover vehicles, would be installed in one North American product, the F-150 pickup. The diesel also is likely to be optional in the Lincoln Navigator. But Mark Fields, Ford executive vice president of the Americas, stopped short of confirming that today at the Los Angeles auto show. The fuel-saving diesel is just one of several technologies Ford will deploy in the next decade as it strives to boost the fuel economy of its fleet and lower emissions while maintaining performance. Ford also will be bringing out gasoline engines that are smaller but more powerful, using what it calls "Twin Force" technology. Twin Force unites gasoline direct injection and a turbocharger. It will debut next year on the Lincoln MKS sedan. Richard Truett contributed to this story |
