Automotive Hall of Fame inducts five

Sergio Pininfarina, Shoichiro Toyoda, A.J. Foyt Jr., Dan Gurney and Charles B. King were inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in suburban Detroit last night.

In addition, the Hall gave Young Leadership and Excellence awards to five individuals under age 35. They were:

  • Scott Costello, commodity manager for global procurement, American Axle & Manufacturing Inc.

  • Jeffrey Gale, design manager for advanced exterior product design, Chrysler LLC.He is the son of retired Chrysler designer Tom Gale.

  • Chaelynne Pope, senior manager for manufacturing planning and program management, Chrysler LLC.

  • Regina Salazar, director of operations for quality and supply chain processes, ArvinMeritor Inc.

  • Vicki Vlachakis, GM design manager for the advanced studio, General Motors.

    Toyoda, 82, is the honorary chairman of Toyota Motor Corp. and son of the auto giant's founder.

    Toyoda said that when he was told half a year earlier that he was to be inducted, he received many telegrams of congratulations. He joked that most said only older people, “those about to leave the stage,” would receive such an award. He added that he was glad to see the younger individuals honored as well.

    Pininfarina has a case of the flu, and his doctor advised him not to make the trip. His son, Paolo, vice chairman of the company that bears the family name, accepted on his behalf.
