All future VW models to have hybrid option

Carmaker is also ‘considering’ an electric engine following approval of the ‘Up’ concept car

Volkswagen will offer a hybrid option on all of its future models.

"Future VW models will fundamentally also be constructed with hybrid concepts," VW head of development Ulrich Hackenberg told sister publication Automobilwoche in an interview.

VW's new rear-engine small car, scheduled to go into production in 2011, will be on offer "in both a full and mild hybrid" version, said Hackenberg. He said the German automaker was exploring the possibility of developing an electric engine for the new small car model.

The car is based on VW's New Small Family platform. The first concept using the platform, the "Up" was unveiled at the IAA in Frankfurt earlier this month.

Expanding BlueMotion

VW also wants to expand the environmentally friendly "BlueMotion" car series.

As well as the compact version of the Tiguan SUV, Hackenberg said there was a "good chance" the Eos cabriolet model could be offered with BlueMotion technology. BlueMotion will be gradually rolled out across the VW range to lower the fleet's average CO2 emissions.

Hackenburg promised "further innovative fuel consumption measures," within the next few years that would build upon the BlueMotion's success.
