Tires contribute to fuel savings for Peugeot 308

Peugeot will equip several models of its new 308 car line with low-rolling resistance tires from Michelin as part of the automaker's effort to cut CO2 emissions.

Versions of the Peugeot 308 equipped with the 1.6-liter diesel engine will be fitted with Michelin's Energy Saver tire, in 15- or 16-inch wheel sizes. The tire will also be used on the diesel hybrid version of the 308, Peugeot said.

Low-rolling resistance tires are one of several technologies automakers are adopting as governments push for better fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions. A low-rolling resistance tire creates less friction than a conventional tire, resulting in better fuel economy. Other strategies include cutting vehicle weight, using more efficient transmissions and adding hybrid powertrains

The EU is developing rules that will push automakers to cut CO2 emissions to 130 grams per kilometer by 2012. Included in the figure is a saving of 10g/km through technologies such as low rolling-resistance tires.

Michelin's competitors, including Continental, Goodyear and Bridgestone, market low-rolling resistance tires to automakers and consumers.

Michelin said its new tires will cut fuel consumption by nearly 0.2 liter per 100 kilometers on the combined driving cycle test, and cut CO2 emissions by nearly 4 grams per kilometer, compared with conventional tires.

The tire maker said it plans to make the Energy Saver line available in the replacement market in 2008.
