LOS ANGELES -- A replacement for Hyundai's sporty Tiburon coupe will have rear-wheel drive when it goes on sale in late 2008 or mid-2009. A Hyundai source confirms that a replacement for the front-wheel-drive Tiburon will be the second model on the automaker's new rwd platform. The first will be the Genesis sedan, which goes on sale in summer 2008. "There will be a coupe off the Genesis," the Hyundai source confirms. "It will come six months to a year after Genesis. It will be the replacement for the Tiburon." Hyundai has said the Genesis sedan will be the first of several vehicles developed on the new rwd platform. The Tiburon replacement also may come in a convertible. Hyundai Motor Co., known for small and mid-sized value-priced cars, wants to move upscale. When the Genesis goes on sale, it will be available with a new V-8 engine developed by Hyundai. It will be the company's first V-8-powered car and first rwd car in this country. The base Genesis will be powered by a 3.8-liter V-6. Prices will range from about $30,000 to under $40,000. Genesis is benchmarking the BMW 5 series. The Tiburon replacement will go after the likes of the Infiniti G35 coupe. The Tiburon, with a base price of $17,295, was restyled for the 2007 model year to give it a more sporty look. It is powered by an inline-four-cylinder engine and an optional V-6. Sources say the new model will be equipped with the V-6. They do not know whether it will also get the V-8.
