BMW aims to sell more than 100,000 M3s

MARBELLA, Spain – BMW aims to sell more than 100,000 units of its fourth-generation M3 high-performance car.

With every new generation of the M3, BMW has succeeded in raising sales. The M3 is a performance version of the 3-series coupe.

"With every new model, we want to offer a better product and sell more," said Carsten Pries, product manager of BMW's M division, at the car's launch here. M is the name that BMW gives to its performance cars unit.

During its lifecycle, BMW sold 18,000 units of the first-generation M3, which was introduced in 1986. It sold 72,000 units of the second-generation M3 that was built between 1992 and 1999.

The third-generation M3 sold more than 90,000 units. BMW stopped making it last year.

The fourth-generation M3 goes on sale starting in September with prices beginning at 67,900 euros. The car is powered by a new, 4.0-liter V-8 engine delivering 420hp.

Pries said the new M3 is 17 percent more powerful than its predecessor, but it weighs 7 percent less. A brake energy-regeneration system also lowers fuel consumption by 8 percent.

BMW said the new M3 shares only 20 percent of its parts with the 3-series coupe. These are the body shell, doors, trunk lid, glazing, and front and rear lamps.

Its customized parts include an aluminum hood, carbon fiber reinforced plastic roof and aluminum suspension.
