Strike threatens tire supply

DETROIT -- Automakers could see tire shortages if 15,000 union workers at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. don't return to work within several weeks.

"We are not anticipating near-term problems," says Chrysler group spokesman Markus Mainka. "We took precautions and built inventories before the strike."

General Motors, which buys 8 million Goodyear tires annually, has a 30-day bank of tires. All North American automakers use Goodyear tires.

Workers at 16 Goodyear plants in the United States and Canada went on strike Thursday, Oct. 5.
